The problem

Most matcha isn’t matcha

Most of what’s sold as “ceremonial grade” is culinary-grade matcha with a premium label slapped on: late harvest, machine-ground, cut with fillers.

That’s why it tastes bitter and chalky instead of smooth and sweet.

Try the real thing

From farm to jar

Grown in the shade for weeks before harvest, hand-picked at first flush and stone-ground into a whisper-fine powder, the way matcha has been made for centuries.

  1. 1

    Shade-grown

Covered for weeks before harvest, which builds sweetness and a deep green colour.

  2. 2

    Hand-picked at first flush

Only the youngest, most tender leaves make it into the jar.

  3. 3

    Stone-ground

Milled slowly into a whisper-fine powder.

Questions, answered

Bitterness usually comes from lower-grade or blended tea, old powder, or water that is too hot. Creative Matcha is ceremonial grade and freshly milled, so it is rich and creamy with zero bitterness when you prepare it with warm, not boiling, water.

Sift ½–1 teaspoon (about 1–2 g) into a bowl. Add 60–80 ml of water at about 75–80 °C, not boiling. Whisk in a quick W or M motion for 15–30 seconds until frothy. Drink it as it is or top it with milk.

A bamboo whisk (chasen) gives the finest foam, but it is not required. An electric milk frother works well, and so does a tightly closed jar that you shake, which is handy for iced drinks.

A typical 2 g serving has roughly 60–70 mg of caffeine: more than steeped green tea and a bit less than a cup of coffee. Matcha also contains L-theanine, which many people find makes the lift feel steadier. If you are sensitive to caffeine, skip it late in the day.

Keep the jar tightly closed in a cool, dark, dry place, away from heat, light and strong smells. Reseal it after each use. For the best colour and flavour, enjoy it within a couple of months of opening.

Standard takes 3–5 business days and Express 1–2 business days. Delivery is free from 5 jars. See the shipping page for rates.
